YONKERS: Firefighters fought a furious fire next to St. George's Greek Orthodox Church on freezing cold night in Yonkers.

 Church rectory goes up in flames overnight in Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. -- A church rectory went up in flames overnight in Westchester County.

Crews were called around 3 a.m. to a church on Buckingham Road in Yonkers

When they arrived, the rectory was engulfed in flames and smoke was filling the neighborhood.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the rectory, preventing them from spreading to the church. There was also a partial collapse in the back of the building. 

Neighbors told CBS New York's Christina Fan the building was formerly Bryn Mawr Park Presbyterian Church, but it sold about six months ago and now houses a different congregation. 

The cause is under investigation, but officials said the building was undergoing construction at the time.

A devastating fire overnight at the Bryn Mawr Park Children's Learning Center, connected to the Bryn Mawr Park Presbyterian Church in Yonkers, has resulted in the complete destruction of the day care center.

Authorities received reports of smoke around 3 a.m., prompting a rapid response from fire officials to 20 Buckingham Road.

Upon arrival, the learning center was fully engulfed in flames.

The fire escalated to three alarms, requiring the presence of 70-80 firefighters, including personnel from neighboring municipalities, to combat the blaze.

Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Joe Citrone confirmed that while the center suffered extensive damage with the rectory's roof and several walls collapsing, the adjacent church remained unharmed.....

The aftermath of the fire that started at Saint George Orthodox Church (20 Buckingham Rd) earlier today at 2:45am.

Thanks God there was no one injured and the Church suffered no fire damage.

YONKERS, Westchester County (WABC) --
A three-alarm fire burned through the rectory of a former church n Yonkers Tuesday morning.

Officials say flames broke out at around 3 a.m. in the building on Buckingham Road.

NewsCopter 7 was over the scene as smoke billowed from the structure.

Firefighters kept the fire from extending to the St. George Orthodox Church nearby. About 70 to 80 firefighters fought the blaze from the outside.

Authorities say the building recently housed a day care that was connected to the church's former occupant, the Bryn Mawr Park Presbyterian Church.

The church is currently under renovation and officials believe the construction may have sparked the flames.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews battled a massive fire at a Westchester church overnight. The Yonkers Fire Department is telling morning rush hour commuters to continue to avoid the area.

Several roads remain closed near the top of Lockwood Avenue in the city.

It was nearly 3 a.m. when firefighters were called to the church on Buckingham Road in Yonkers.

Neighbors told CBS New York's Christina Fan the church was formerly Bryn Mawr Park Presbyterian Church, but it was recently sold and there is a new congregation there now.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the rectory was already engulfed, according to the station. Firefighters were reportedly able to save the main church, containing the blaze to the rectory building.

The incident began on Tuesday, Dec. 12 around 3 a.m., when a fire broke out in the rectory of a former church in Yonkers on the corner of Buckingham Road and Lockwood Avenue, according to ABC News.

The building, which had been a daycare associated with the former Bryn Mawr Park Presbyterian Church, was soon completely engulfed in flames. Luckily though, the more than 70 firefighters who responded to the scene were able to keep the blaze from reaching the St. George Orthodox Church located next door to the building, the outlet reported.

The blaze was eventually extinguished by 6 a.m., according to Yonkers fire officials, who asked the public to stay away from the scene as crews continued to pick up equipment.

The incident caused all roads in the area to close during the early work and school commute.
